Meta | Natural Reserve Rey Zamuro
The project is located in the Meta Department and it´s focus is the conservation of the forests and savannas of Orinoco’s region.
The Rey Zamuro – Matarredonda Natural Reserve is located east of San Martin de los Llanos in the department of Meta: a unique place between the Serranía del Manacacías and the Piedemonte. Rey Zamuro-Matarredonda exists thanks to the continuous effort to seek a good coexistence between cattle ranching and environmental conservation. This process respects the family efforts of several generations of traditional cattle ranchers who have worked to safeguard the coexistence of cows, bulls, calves, wild animals, and savanna, gallery forest, and moriche ecosystems. The reserve’s management plan and raison d’être is centered on respect for biodiversity, conserving water resources, the “matas de monte”, and the home of a great diversity of animals in the region such as felines, turtles, lizards, insects, snakes, birds, fish, frogs, and monkeys, among many others.
Currently we have approximately 150 species of plants, 40 species of flying mammals (bats), 30 species of terrestrial mammals – medium and large, 76 species of amphibians and reptiles, 250 species of birds, more than 100 species of fish, and an infinity of insects, other arthropods and more invertebrates.
