Description
Piptocoma discolor is characterized as a small tree or shrub, growing 4 to 15 meters tall. It is common in open areas and secondary forests, such as those found in Altos de Campana National Park and El Montuoso Forest Reserve in Panama. The species is considered a pioneer species with multiple uses and rapid growth, adapting well to disturbed or secondary forest environments in its native tropical habitats.
In a study of an evergreen Amazonian-Andean forest in Ecuador, Piptocoma discolor was found to be one of the species with the highest Importance Value Index (IVI). It ranked third with an IVI of 19.22, indicating its significant ecological role in the forest structure and composition.
